Thank you for the feedback.

I don't think that the SMTP server is the problem as I am referring it
to my DSL providers SMTP server.  This works for all my other email
accounts - and anyway in the Outlook test for my Linux IPOPD account it
successfully connects to the SMTP server.

I have also been running the TCP-DUMP option as suggested by Rod.  This
produces a lot of output when I try and connect to the POP server from
my client machine - but I haven't deciphered the output yet.

I went and looked at all the Linux books I could find regarding IPOPD -
but the information seemed very scant - as it does on the Internet.
Maybe it works for most people first time!

The results of the tests you have performed indicate that the problem is
in Outlook.

I am pretty sure Outlook "sends" mail before it "pop"s it, so be sure
your
smtp server is configured correctly as well as the pop server.
