Job Description for Linux Systems Administrator position:
Responsibilities include:
* Install and configure operating system software and associated
patches or updates
* Manage file systems, monitor performance and troubleshoot alerts
from commercial, open source and locally developed monitoring tools.
* Provide and implement monitoring processes and/or tools and use
automated system software tools and/or procedures to proactively
monitor, manage and report on server performance
* Perform proactive fault detection and diagnostic procedures
* Monitor/recommend tuning of performance of all servers
* Install, configure and manage backup software for host-level backup
and recovery
* Perform analysis and recovery during system failures; ensuring the
consistency and integrity of file systems
* Manage system hardware/software configuration
* Monitor vendor resources for any required operating system patches
or upgrades
* Monitor vendor resources for any required hardware upgrades
* Manage hardware warranties
* Monitor security advisories for operating system and infrastructure
software, and take appropriate actions to safeguard resources
* Implement security patches as needed
* Monitor and ensure proper system firewall rules and security
* Manage server accounts
* Install firmware upgrades as required
* Maintain operating system and supported software documentation
* Propose hardware and software configuration and installation standards
* Assist technical teams in applying best practices in securing the
data and information systems under their control
* Actively participate in developing, implementing, and managing
network security policies, plans, and procedures, including security
architectures, firewall policies, intrusion detection systems,
security data collection systems, and integrated security products
* Participate in establishing, reviewing and maintaining University
information security policies and procedures; work closely and
cooperatively with other University staff members involved with
information security and privacy issues; participates in ensuring
security compliance with governmental regulatory requirements
* Perform system-level housekeeping activities to ensure systems are
operating at optimal levels
* Provide technical support and general troubleshooting
* Support 100+ servers in a 24x7 data center
* Coordinate hardware upgrades with hardware support vendors as needed
* Develop hardware and software configuration and installation standards
* Serve as a mentor to other system administrators
Qualifications Required:
* Minimum of 3 years of knowledge of RedHat Linux
* Familiarity with common server-administration tasks, including
automated installation, system upgrades, software management, and
troubleshooting hardware and software issues
* Experience with enterprise systems management entities (enterprise
storage systems, authentication, directory services, email/web
services)
* Experience with VMware /ESX, NetApps FAS highly desirable
* Proven ability to use programming languages (UNIX shell, perl, etc.)
to design and implement tools, utilities, and technical project
solutions
