JOB SUMMARY:
O'Reilly Media's Conferences division is seeking a Ruby On Rails
expert to design, develop, and support features of the Content
Management System powering our event websites. The ideal candidate is
a professional, organized self-starter with excellent analytical
skills, fluent in the system?s underlying technologies (Linux, MySQL,
Rails), and capable of translating business requirements into
software. This position reports to the Web Production Manager and is
located at our corporate headquarters offices in Sebastopol, CA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Development of new and maintenance of existing web application
features for both internal administrators and public-facing end users
* Contribution to the design of software based on requirements defined
by both technical and non-technical business stakeholders.
* Extending and maintaining JSON and Liquid-based APIs
* Work with manager and business analysts to identify opportunities
and alternatives to enhance revenue, increase efficiencies, and
deliver critical information
* Ensure business process modifications, documentation, and training
are adequate to support new releases
* Support bug fixes, enhancements, and disaster recovery efforts for
existing software and systems
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
* Expert knowledge and practical application in Ruby on Rails as used
with RSpec and/or other TDD practices
* Strong working knowledge of Linux
* Strong working knowledge of relational database systems using MySQL
* Strong knowledge of JQuery, HTML, and CSS
* Working knowledge and practical application with version control
software (e.g. git)
* Working knowledge and practical application with issue tracking
systems (i.e. Jira, Redmine, Zendesk)
* Working knowledge and practical application with e-commerce
applications that interface with Payment Gateways
* Knowledge and understanding of Web Performance Optimization concepts
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, especially
as they pertain to technical writing and documentation
* Excellent analytical and time management skills
* Ability to work well under pressure and adapt to a changing business
environment
* Ability to work with others across a diverse set of domains
* Ability to quickly acquire domain knowledge
* Ability to maintain interest and enthusiasm for writing software and
understanding users
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* 4-year college degree in Computer Science or related field, or
combination of relevant education and experience
* 2 years experience experience with Ruby on Rails
* 4 years experience developing Software or Web Applications
