Job Description

The Safeway Information Technology Department in Walnut Creek,
California has an opening for a Linux Engineer.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 


*	Install, configure, test and implement open-source and
commercial infrastructure application products on Linux. 
*	Help develop and improve standards, guidelines and procedures
for the above products and for their ongoing management, appropriate to
a corporate computing environment 
*	Participate in projects to enhance our ability to manage and
reduce the overall costs of the midrange systems environment 
*	Work with application architects to ensure that new application
designs fit into the midrange infrastructure and that operational
controls are part of the initial design 
*	Help to evaluate and recommend new midrange software and
hardware for use at Safeway 
*	Provide last level midrange problem resolution services for
issues requiring a re-engineering of a managed product or platform,
including participating in rotating on-call support. 
*	Limited travel for training and on-site data center support. 

Required Skills

The following are preferred or desired unless specifically stated:


*	4+ years professional experience as a system engineer working
with Open Source Linux operating systems and Open Source products in a
large-scale, distributed corporate environment is an required. SuSE
Linux Enterprise Server 9 experience preferred 
*	Strong preference will be afforded to those having experience
establishing processes for the management and deployment of open-source
products in such an environment 
*	Fluency in bash shell and Perl scripting is required, Python and
PHP will be advantageous 
*	Experience engineering products such as PostgreSQL, DB2/UDB,
AJAX, or Opsware, will all be advantageous 
*	B.Sc. in a technical field is required, Computer Science
preferred 
*	Proven ability to analyze problems, propose solutions, and drive
issues to resolution 
*	Able to juggle multiple projects and to cope with changing
priorities 
*	Good interpersonal, communication and listening skills 
*	Able to lead and influence others and to be influenced
gracefully 
*	Results oriented, willing to take responsibility and accept
accountability for action 
*	Genuine desire to provide superior customer service to our I/T
customers
