I don't know about Ubuntu.  You will get a wider audience and perhaps 
better response if you post to the "vox-tech" list rather than vox-if.

BTW:  you will probably be best off with a more widely used 
distribution.  I am recommending Fedora quite often lately.  Depending 
on your modem, you may not get it to work in any Linux distribution. 
Modems have a notoriously low success rate in Linux.
