  July 17, 2006
  6:30pm - 9:00pm

The meeting will be held at:

  315 East 14th St.
  Davis, California 95616

Presentation:

  iptables

  Presented by: Ryan Castellucci

iptables [ http://www.netfilter.org/ ] is a tool for Linux that
allows system administrators to create rules for filtering network
packet. (It is the successor to 'ipchains'.) The framework enables
packet filtering, network address [and port] translation (NA[P]T) and
    other packet mangling.

Its main features include 'stateless' and 'stateful' packet filtering,
network address and port translation, and multiple layers of API's for
third-party extensions. (A large number of plugins/modules are
    available in the 'patch-o-matic' repository.)

With it, you can build internet firewalls, use NAT and masquerading
for sharing internet access (e.g., if you don't have enough public IP
addresses), build sophisticated quality of service (QoS) and policy
    routers, and more.
