Typography, the TeX Typesetting System and PostScript
presented by: Micah Cowan
A general survey on writing documentation, including PostScript,
TeX and DocBook, and possibly some brief comments on OpenOffice.org
and/or AbiWord.
PostScript is a device-independent page description language used
primarily in electronic and desktop publishing. Prior to the
introduction of PostScript, printers were designed to print character
output given only text as input. As dot matrix and laser printers
introduced 'raster' graphics to printing, PostScript stepped in to
allow text and graphics to be mixed on the page.
DocBook is a markup language for technical documentation, originally
intended for authoring technical documents relating to computer
hardware and software. It is used many places, including the Linux
Documentation Project, the Linux kernel documentation, GNOME, and the
Solaris OS's manpages.
TeX is a typesetting system popular in academia, especially in the
mathematics, physics and computer science communities. It generally
considered to be the best way to typeset complex mathematical
formulas, but, especially in the form of LaTeX and other template
packages, is now also being used for many other typesetting tasks.
